What is The ick?

The ick is a sudden feeling of disgust or loss of attraction toward someone you liked, triggered by a small, often trivial behaviour or detail.

The ick describes the moment attraction vanishes because of something minor: the way someone laughs, a habit, a phrase they use or how they treat an object. It tends to arrive suddenly and can be hard to explain, even to yourself. The word is a slangy way of saying a person has become unappealing.

It is usually not a rational judgement of someone's character. Often it reflects how attraction depends on a delicate mix of chemistry, expectations and perception, which a small detail can disrupt. Occasionally it can mask a deeper doubt about the relationship that you have not yet acknowledged.

Having the ick does not make you shallow or the other person flawed. It is worth thinking about, though. If the trigger is trivial and your interest was strong, give it a little time. If the feeling lingers, being honest and kind about it is better than blaming the person.

Example: Leah has been enjoying a week of dates with Marco, then watches him argue with a street performer about a tip and suddenly cannot see him the same way. She isn't sure why, but the attraction has gone.

Signs

  • A sudden drop in attraction after a minor detail
  • Difficulty explaining why you feel off
  • Noticing the trigger repeatedly once it appears
  • Loss of physical or emotional interest despite earlier enjoyment

What to do

  • Pause and ask whether the trigger is trivial or points to a deeper value mismatch
  • Give yourself a little time before deciding, especially if the connection was otherwise good
  • Be honest with yourself about whether there was doubt already
  • If you end things, do it kindly and without listing the person's quirks
  • Do not shame others for their quirks; everyone has things others might find off-putting

Frequently asked questions

Is the ick a valid reason to end things?

Yes, attraction matters. But consider whether the trigger is trivial or reflects something deeper before deciding.

Can the ick go away?

Sometimes, particularly if it was a passing reaction. If it persists and affects your attraction, it may be a sign the connection is not right for you.
