What is Slow fade?

The slow fade is gradually reducing contact with someone, with slower replies and fewer plans, until the connection ends without a direct conversation.

The slow fade is a way of ending a connection by gradually pulling back. Replies take longer, messages become shorter, invitations are declined and eventually communication stops. Unlike ghosting, there is no sudden disappearance, so the ending is easy to miss until it has already happened.

People choose it because it feels less confrontational. They hope the other person will take the hint without anyone having to say something uncomfortable. The trouble is that it can drag on for weeks, leaving the other person hopeful, confused or hurt.

If you are on the receiving end, trust the pattern. When effort drops steadily and doesn't recover, the connection has probably cooled. Asking directly can give you clarity, and you are allowed to end the uncertainty yourself.

Example: Ravi used to reply to Elena within minutes. Over a month his answers slow to a day, then to a few words, and plans keep being postponed. Eventually, they stop texting without either mentioning it.
