What is Pocketing?

Pocketing is keeping a partner out of sight of friends, family and social media, as though tucked in a pocket, while the relationship continues privately.

Pocketing is when someone keeps a relationship hidden from their social world. You may spend time together, text daily and be physically close, but you are never introduced to friends or family and rarely appear online. The person has put you in their pocket.

It is a close relative of stashing, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. Pocketing leans toward the sense of being kept for convenience, available when the person wants you but invisible otherwise. Reasons range from genuine privacy to uncertainty about the relationship or reluctance to commit.

What matters is how it feels and whether it is mutual. If both partners prefer discretion, it can be perfectly healthy. If you feel excluded or hidden against your wishes, it is reasonable to raise it.

Example: Jules and Sam have been seeing each other for three months. Sam never posts about Jules, and every time Jules suggests meeting friends, Sam says the timing is wrong.

Signs

  • You are never introduced to people who matter to them
  • Nothing about the relationship appears on social media
  • They avoid public outings and prefer to meet privately
  • They get uneasy when you suggest becoming more visible

What to do

  • Say clearly that you would like to be part of their wider life
  • Ask what is making them hesitate and listen without assuming the worst
  • Offer a small step, such as a coffee with one friend
  • Compare their words with their actions over several weeks
  • If nothing changes, decide whether privacy-only suits you

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pocketing and stashing?

They are nearly identical. Pocketing emphasises being kept around for convenience, while stashing emphasises being hidden from others.

Does pocketing mean the person is not serious?

Not always, but it can signal hesitation. Honest conversation about their reasons will tell you more than guessing.
