What is Gaslighting?

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which someone makes you doubt your own memory, perception or sanity.

Gaslighting is a pattern of manipulation where one person denies or distorts reality so that the other begins to question what they remember, feel or know. The term comes from the 1938 play and later films titled Gas Light, in which a husband tries to convince his wife she is losing her mind.

In dating it can look like denying things that were clearly said, insisting you are 'too sensitive', rewriting past events, or turning your concerns back on you. Over time the pattern wears down your confidence and makes you rely on the other person to tell you what is real.

It is important to separate gaslighting from ordinary disagreement. Two people can remember a conversation differently without either being manipulative. Gaslighting is persistent, one-sided and used to avoid accountability or to control. If you suspect it, you do not need to prove intent; it is enough that the pattern is harming you.

Example: Nadia reminds Tom that he promised to call on Friday. He replies that he never said that, that she always misremembers things, and that she is overreacting. This has happened several times, and Nadia has started writing things down because she no longer trusts her own memory.

Signs

  • Regularly denying things they clearly said or did
  • Calling you 'crazy', 'dramatic' or 'too sensitive' when you raise concerns
  • Rewriting events so that you are always at fault
  • Making you doubt your memory and judgment over time
  • Isolating you from friends or family who see the pattern

What to do

  • Keep notes or screenshots of important conversations to anchor your memory.
  • Talk to trusted friends or family and check your perception with them.
  • Name the behavior calmly once, and watch whether it changes.
  • Do not wait for the other person to admit it; decide based on how the relationship affects you.
  • Consider speaking with a licensed therapist or a support service if you feel unsafe or unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Is every disagreement about what happened gaslighting?

No. Honest differences in memory are normal. Gaslighting is a repeated pattern of denial and blame that leaves you doubting yourself and avoids accountability.

Can someone gaslight without knowing it?

Some people use these tactics deliberately and others do so out of habit or defensiveness. The impact on you is what matters most, and a repeating pattern deserves attention either way.
